Paulo Nobis Sandén, film editor and assistant to Jan Troell, presents I Am a Camera – Jan Troell and Photography, Troell’s first-ever photography exhibition.
The exhibition features Jan Troell’s cameras alongside hundreds of photographs drawn from both his private life and his work in film. While the creative environment of Smygehamn, just outside Trelleborg, has served as the foundation of his artistic practice, his camera has travelled across much of the world.
Spanning nine decades, the photographs introduce us to figures such as Max von Sydow, Mia Farrow, Charlie Chaplin, John Huston, Liv Ullmann, Monica Zetterlund, Georg Oddner, Ingmar Bergman and Allan Edwall, alongside family members, everyday moments, studies of nature and landscapes close to home. The iconic and the personal coexist without hierarchy.
“Photography has always been important to me,” says Jan Troell. “Even when I was writing screenplays, if I got stuck, I could open a photography book at random. The image that appeared often contained the solution. Being forced to start from that particular image would set my thoughts in motion again.”
