To create the world's greatest collective mural painting, collaboration and diverse skills are required. A steering committee was appointed in March 2021 by the Culture and Recreation Department, along with the Technical Services Department, QB3 Project Management, Public Culture, Trelleborg Museum, the Youth Unit, the Culture School, and Streetcorner.

With the combined efforts of all departments, the project quickly became a reality, and plans for financing and networking were brought together. The first meeting took place in the large sports hall at Södan, where common interests and a shared desire to strengthen Trelleborg for its citizens through a truly grand mural painting were found. But could this be done during times of a pandemic and within a timeframe of 10 weeks? Everyone agreed to take the plunge – to create something positive in gloomy times. The project's design was planned, and project goals were set up:

  • Create a new entrance to Trelleborg, establishing a space and place, a landmark/attraction.
  • Local anchoring and historical connection with cultural added value.
  • A fully realized and immersive living environment.
  • Engage as many people as possible with the absolute best results.
  • Instill pride, relinquish ownership, and build community and inspiration for participants and visitors.
  • Collaboration between younger and older generations. Exchange of knowledge among everyone in the city.
  • World record ambitions.
  • High artistic representation - the world's greatest mural painting!

It became important to establish an understanding that a project of this magnitude requires an exceptional level of trust in the creative and artistic process, with experienced professionals acting as guides. The co-creation process necessitates attentiveness, openness, acceptance, and flexibility in its design. This means that it is only in the final stages of the project that finished drawings can be revealed. First and foremost, materials are gathered through surveys, archives, interviews, and workshops conducted with the people of Trelleborg to develop crucial preliminary sketches for the painting. All of this is done to shape the content and motifs. It's an exciting and exploratory journey!
