Älskade korg! Braided, tied and twisted

9 May 2023
En mängd korgar av olika slag mot en turkosfärgad bakgrund.

The exhibition “Älskade korg!” wants to spark curiosity about the craftsmanship, show the diversity of baskets in Sweden and tell a story about the rich tradition of basked braiding all around the country.

A basket for mushrooms, berries, trash, or for shopping. The basket as transport, storage carrying assistance has a long tradition in Sweden and baskets and wicker furniture trends in our interior design stores. Even in the webstore, the basket has a definite place but in a digital form.

There are however few basket makers left in Sweden and the knowledge of braiding and tying baskets is fading away.

The exhibition Älskade Korg! wants to spark curiosity about the craftsmanship, show the diversity of baskets in Sweden and tell a story about the rich tradition of basked braiding all around the country.

Can we keep the traditional basketry craft alive? What part can the basket play in the fight against climate changes? and can it find a new purpose in modern society?

In Älskade Korg!, the basket is seen through the perspective of sustainability, personal creativity and history. The exhibition showcases a wide variety of baskets, material and techniques from different parts of Sweden.

We at Trelleborgs Museum are at the same time showcasing almost all baskets in our collections as part of the exhibition. It includes baskets that were used in agriculture during the 18th and 19th centuries, everyday baskets, and some more refined baskets. The most common type of basket here in the south of Skåne was löbekorgen, a basket woven with straw, one of the most everyday items here in Söderslätt more than 150 years ago.

But we also have brought out baskets from Africa and South America, which are part of our collections, to show that basketry is a craft that has been present with humans in all times and in all parts of the world.
